Iceland Great Adventure

Thursday, Dec. 7,2017

This is a special post for today so I can share a special adventure.

The snow storm finally ended and we were looking forward to some sunny but cold weather today. First on our itinerary for today was an excursion in a large Mercedes all-terrain super truck up the mountain to a glacier. We climbed aboard at 9:30 while it was still dark and headed out.

Shortly after we started we could see some daylight begin to show on the horizon.
The roads were icy and the truck would slide around every now and then. Johann, our driver, handled it well as we continued on. It wasn’t long before we left the road and took off across a glacier lava based riverbed covered with snow and ice. This is looking through the front windshield.

The sun was just showing on the horizon and you can see the area we where driving.

The truck got stuck in a large snow drift so Johann got out and let some air out of the tires so we could get better traction.

BOOM! We went over a huge gully and then we heard CLANG! CLANG! CLANG! and we immediately knew something was not right. Johann drove a little ways further but the noise only got worse. So he decided that we would have to go back. Then we hit a huge snow drift and became stuck. Johann tried to get the truck out and even got out the shovel and started digging but all to no avail. So there we sat in a broken truck on the glacier riverbed with the outside temperature of-7 degrees C (19 F) and winds blowing between 30 and 40 miles an hour. After some discussion and a few phone calls (yep, luckily the cell phones were working), it was decided that Johann would walk to the road where someone would bring another vehicle  to rescue  us.

One of the  places  we were stuck and Johann backed us out.

We got out and assessed the situation.

It appears that the tie rods were broken.

You can see the wind blowing snow.

The really small dot in the center is Johann walking to get help.

We all climbed back into the truck to wait for the rescue vehicle. I got a little nervous when the discussion turned to who we would have to eat to stay alive and it was mentioned it made sense to start with the largest person and they began to look at me.

Luckily it wasn’t long before we saw the rescue vehicle coming. It could only seat half of us so the first group climbed aboard and left.

It really didn’t take long for him to return and retrieve the rest of us.

They don’t call it Overseas ADVENTURE Travel for no reason. We of course didn’t make it to the glacier but we did all make it back to town safely.

I will post the rest of the day’s adventures in another post later. It was a good day with a special highlight to finish the evening. Here is a hint.
