India Extra 1

March 27, 2018

We left Jaipur this morning and rode the bus for about 5 hours to reach the Ranthambore National Tiger reserve area. The long ride was over some very rough and bumpy roads. I have decided that the national entertainment for India is playing highway chicken. There were several times along our route there was a collective gasp followed by “Oh My!” as our bus driver weaved in and out of the traffic lane barely missing large trucks and small motorbikes. Anyway, we made it without a scratch. Not so sure about clean britches.

I forgot to post an important part of my day yesterday. On our way out to the farming village we stopped downtown Jaipur to get another photo opportunity of the Hawa Mahal. There was a snake charmer sitting on the sidewalk where we disembarked. Of course I had to get up close for a photo.

It still amazes me how labor intensive harvesting their wheat is. With farmers having only small 5 acre lots it’s not feasible to bring in the large farming equipment we use at home.  Can you imagine doing this in 100 degree temperatures. My heart goes out to them.

After our long ride we arrived at the resort where we will be staying for 2 nights. The only way I know how to describe it is it’s  like stepping onto a 1930’s India movie set. I felt like a British Lord coming for the tiger safari. The resort is built like a palace with several connecting courtyards, pools, and extensive wait staff.

One of the inner courtyards

The main courtyard where tea, coffee and biscuits (cookies for us non-British people) are served twice a day.

There are some beautiful shrubs and flowers in the garden areas.

The main pool is complete with marble elephants spraying water from their trunks.

The pool is designed like the old step pools of ancient times.

The doors to the rooms have the old style slide bar with a padlock.

The inside is very spacious with 2 writing desks, a wardrobe, and sitting area. There is no tv which is great. One modern convenience is air conditioning.

The stained glass window over the door is especially pretty at night from the outside as the light makes it look like a peacock’s fanned tail.

I could get used to this. It will be fine if you call me Lord Rusty.
