Featherbed Nature Reserve

Thursday - Knysna (neese-na) is located on a lagoon off the Indian Ocean. Today we took a ferry across the lagoon to visit the Featherbed Nature Reserve. The reserve is located on one of the giant sandstone cliffs that form the gateway into the lagoon.

We were transported to the top of the cliff on trailers being pulled by 4X4 trucks. The ride up offered some spectacular views of the lagoon and the ocean. Once on top we disembarked and walked down a nature path to reach the ocean shore. The views were fantastic. It was a perfect weather day and the walk was so peaceful and relaxing. I will let the pictures speak for themselves.

Side note: I tried another local delicacy for dinner - Zebra. It was very tender and delicious. (Sorry animal activist)

The Twin Heads of the lagoon gateway. We went to the top of the right one.

Oudtshoorn Ostrich Farm

Yesterday, Wednesday, we went into the mountains to visit a town called Oudtshoorn. This is an area known for developing the ostrich feather market in the late 1880's. Ostrich feathers were brining more per ounce than even gold during the peak market years. By the early 1900's only gold, diamonds and wool ranked higher than ostrich feathers in exported goods.

This is in the town of Oudtshoorn.

Many large mansions were built with the wealth generated.

We got to visit a working farm and saw the different stages of growth.

The egg shells are strong enough for even a person my size can stand on them without breaking. The ostrich hen has to lay the eggs on a hard surface and then uses their breastbone to crack the shell when it is time for them to hatch.

Some of the lighter ones of the group were given a chance to sit on and even ride an ostrich.

They have ostrich races.

We were served an ostrich steak for lunch. I was surprised at how tender and tasty it was.

The drive through the mountains offered some fantastic scenery.

This is looking across the water at the town of Knysna where we have been staying for a few nights. It is a beautiful waterfront town.

It is spring time here and there are some beautiful flowers blooming.

Garden Route

This is Tuesday's post since I didn't have internet access last night. We left Port Elizabeth and traveled the famous Garden Route along the southern coastline. There were some beautiful mountain vistas and golden sand beaches.

This is where we stopped for lunch.

along the way we stopped at an animal rescue and re-hab center. They work with injured wild animals and had a collection of various cats. Many of them we hadn't seen before.

Caracal

African Wild Cat (look pretty tame but are very vicious)

Leopard

African Penguins

Meer cats

It was fun walking through the pens with the cats.
