Amazon Canopy Walk

Well, another 5 a.m. wake up so we can be on the boat and ready to leave at 5:30. Today we are traveling 1 3/4 hours down river to experience walking among the tree tops. It was a fantastic morning watching the sunrise over the river.

We had breakfast when we arrived at the ExploraNapo lodge getting ready for our excursion into the tree tops.

There was a capybara roaming around the lodge. It is the largest rodent in the world but acted like an old puppy dog.

There were also some saddleback monkeys begging for bananas.

These gray winged needle nosed birds are very useful in that they eat snakes.

The canopy walkway is about 1,500 feet long and is 118 feet from the jungle floor at it's highest point. We had to take a boat through a twisting canal back into the jungle to reach our starting point.

Then we had to hike further into the jungle to get to the access tower for the canopy bridge.

This is another type of ginger plant.

It is impossible to describe the scale of the height of these walkways. They are made of steel cables with a wooden plank walk laid onto a metal framework (like a section of an extension ladder laid down).
It was truly exhilarating to walk among the tree tops and look out over the jungle that laid below.

No more than 2 people at a time were allowed on a section.

As we reached different tree towers we climbed even higher to go to the next tree.

At tree #4 you can we are 87 feet above the ground.

At tree #6 we reached the highest point of 118 feet.

Looking out over the jungle from tree #6 platform.

There were 16 different tree platforms along the walkway.

This shows some of the cabling.

It was one of the most thrilling experiences I have had.

After a short rest period we headed back to ExploraNapo Lodge for lunch. Now there were squirrel monkeys wanting bananas.

After lunch we hiked to see the local Shaman where we learned about using native plants for medicinal purposes.

The plants were labeled.

The Shaman offered to perform a cleansing and healing prayer for us. It was a great experience.

We then boarded the boat for our journey back to our lodge and dinner.

Another fantastic day.
