Tjapukai

Today we visited the Tjapukai (jab-a-ki - tribal people of rainforest) Aboriginal Culture Park, took the Skyrail gondola ride over the top of the rainforest, and visited Kuranda village. At the Culture Park we watched Aborigines perform some traditional dances, was shown how to throw a spear and boomerang (I need a lot more practice), had the art of performing on a didgeridoo demonstrated, and learned about Aboriginal use of local plants for medicinal and general health issues.

Traditional Dances

Spear throwing with a launching stick.

Having a hand at throwing the boomerang.

The making and playing of the didgeridoo.

The Aborigines didn't have a written language so used painting to tell their stories and to record  their history.

After the cultural center we rode the Skyrail Cableway over the top of the rainforest. We got out at one point and took a stroll through the forest. The cableway goes 7.5 kms over the trees to Kuranda.

Entering the village of Kuranda. I had my first taste of kangaroo meat here. Wasn't gamey at all. Did put a spring in my step for the afternoon.
